Omni (2017)

OMNI is a short film depicting the grotesque nature of mass surveillance, eavesdropping, and the systematic spying of individuals by their governments. Structured as a montage, the film follows fragments from the life of an ordinary person, revealing how constant observation quietly infiltrates the most mundane moments of everyday existence.

On a technical level, each scene introduces new information that gradually accumulates toward a final, unsettling payoff. The film embraces a Kafkaesque environment, emphasizing the absurdity and psychological weight of living under perpetual monitoring.

By placing an actual human figure beside the main character every time he uses his phone, OMNI transforms an abstract digital threat into a tangible presence—suggesting that the person being watched could be any one of us. The eerie and sinister intruder underscores privacy as a fundamental human right, now dangerously eroded.

OMNI was filmed entirely in a single evening inside an apartment, yet its controlled visual language gives the film a meticulously constructed sense of unease. Through deliberate lighting choices, calculated camera framing, and restrained movement, the space transforms into an uncanny environment where tension quietly accumulates.

Director Armen Sarvari pre-lit and pre-rigged each scene before shooting, allowing the apartment to remain intentionally dim. This approach amplifies the unnatural glow of phone screens, turning everyday technology into an invasive visual force.

Within this carefully shaped atmosphere, lead actor Armen Babasoloukian delivers a measured, internal performance that anchors the film’s psychological weight. His subtle reactions—combined with precise blocking and framing—heighten the sense that something is always present, always watching, even when nothing is overtly revealed.
