The 8mm Ballad (2012)

The 8mm Ballad is a quiet meditation on love, memory, and the passage of time. Shot entirely on 16mm film as part of UCLA’s cinematography program, the project embraces the discipline and fragility of analog cinema. Following a lonely night-shift technician who falls in love with a woman preserved on home-movie reels, the film blurs the line between recorded life and imagined connection. More than a narrative, The 8mm Ballad is a love letter to film itself—its grain, its limits, and its ability to hold moments that time has already taken away.

There were no glowing billboards, no voices selling attention, no silent commands to look elsewhere. Life unfolded in front of the eyes, not behind glass. It was there—far from constant signals and endless feeds—that the absence of screens became a presence of its own. And in that quiet clarity came the realization: when our gaze is trapped inside a device, life does not pause—we simply stop noticing it.
